Crashes and support
First, see if it happens again
A heavily modded Skyrim crashes now and then for no lasting reason. Before reporting a crash:
- Restart the game through Mod Organizer 2 and load your last save.
- Do the same thing again.
If it does not happen again, it was most likely a one-off; carry on. If it happens again in the same place or doing the same thing, it is worth reporting, and you now know how to make it happen, which is the most useful thing you can send.
Where the crash logs are
The list uses Crash Logger. When the game crashes it writes a log to:
Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\SKSE
The file is named crash- followed by the date and time, and ends in .log. The newest one belongs to your latest crash. In the same folder, skse64.log is the Script Extender's own log, which helps when the game does not start at all.
This folder is in your Windows Documents folder, not in the install; that is where the game keeps its logs even though the list keeps its saves and settings inside the install.
What to send
- The crash log from the folder above, the newest
crash-*.log, as a file rather than a screenshot. - Your save files: the save you loaded before the crash and, if there is one, the save the game made just before it. Saves are in the profile's
savesfolder in the install. Each save is two files with the same name, one ending.essand one ending.skse; send both. - What you were doing, step by step, so someone else can make it happen: where you were, what you pressed, and what you had just done.
- The Njordlinger version you are on, and anything you changed or added yourself (see safe to change).
Where to send it
TODO: where players report problems (a Discord channel, the Nexus page, or both), and the link. Leave this until the support channel is decided.
Before reporting
- Check Known issues; the problem may already have a fix.
- If you added or changed mods yourself, turn them off and see if the problem stays.
- TODO: a sentence in the author's own words about what players can expect from support (who answers, and how quickly).
